October, 2010 NPR’s recent termination of NPR News Analyst Juan Williams’ contract was a cause of concern for many, and resulted in a number of letters, calls and emails to WCBU. We appreciate the comments heard from those who were critical, and we appreciate the outpouring of support from our listeners. I want to assure you that this decision was made by the management of NPR without input on the part of local stations. His remarks and behavior over the years violated NPR's policies. His termination was the result of continued violation of those policies. There are those who feel that federal funding for public radio should be eliminated because of this action. WCBU receives 12 percent of its total budget from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, an organization that distributes federal funds to public radio and television stations. Elimination of this funding would have a negative effect on WCBU’s ability to produce programming serving central Illinois. I have worked in public radio for many years, and over the years I made many friends at NPR. They are hard working, professionals who take journalism seriously. I applaud them and their contribution to American media. Thomas Hunt, Executive Director ___________________________________________________ August, 2010 “The electronic media provide an immediacy and intimacy that can bring Americans together… These magnificent electronic extensions of ourselves can teach, and heal, and inspire, if we use them not for the pursuit of the least common denominator but for their highest human potential.” --1979 Carnegie Commission Report on the future of Public Broadcasting WCBU was on the air for nine years when those words were written. Most of us working in public broadcasting were very much aware of, and excited about the potential of public radio and television. Our goals were idealistic, and we worked hard to achieve them. More than 30 years have passed, and WCBU is in its 40th year of service to central Illinois. We have accomplished so much, establishing public radio as a source of news, culture, entertainment and education. WCBU continues to strive for excellence as an extension of the human spirit, and at the same time, a mirror, so that we can see who we really are as a society. This is done through hard work, a dedicated staff, generous listener support and a vision for the future. I am pleased that WCBU enjoys all of these elements. The 21st Century is loaded with technology, innovation and change. Successful stations will embrace these changes and use them to the best advantage of the listener and the community. It’s going to be a second 40 years. Come on along! Thank you. Thomas Hunt, Executive Director |
