Jasti Rao named Peorian of the Year

A professor and researcher with the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria has received the first Peorian of the Year award.  Doctor Jasti Rao heads the Cancer Research Center at UICOMP and is the first recipient of the award from The Peorian magazine.  He was chosen through a vote by readers of the magazine that launched last year.  The magazine is also giving $10,000 to a non-profit that the winner chooses. Dr. Rao says he chose the Children’s Hospital of Illinois because of work he’s doing with childhood cancer:

“I thought the Children’s Hospital deserved that because I’m doing a lot of research on…neuro blastoma cancers and I thought this is going to help them,” Rao says.

Dr. Rao leads a team of researchers and his efforts have already led to the discovery of an anti-cancer treatment and millions of dollars in grant funding.   Other nominees for the award included retired Cat CEO Glen Barton, ELITE founder Carl Cannon and Peoria Park District director Bonnie Noble.
