About 35 incoming Washington Gifted Middle School students are learning what will be expected as they head back to school. The school launched the four day long “Jump Start” program for the first time this summer. The goal is to help students get acquainted with the facility, other classmates and a more rigorous curriculum before school begins August 20th. Peoria Mayor Jim Ardis also was on hand to answer student questions on everything from why he wanted to become mayor to what volunteer opportunities are available for young people. He says he was impressed with the questions asked. "I think they did a good job. A lot of thought went into those questions. It wasn't just ask a question; there was a thought behind it, and it fit within the topic that they've been discussing which is volunteering and giving back to your community," says Ardis. The students took notes on Mayor Ardis’ comments and will write a paper on how to positively impact their school, family and community by Thursday. The students are also working on research, study, and math skills this week. |
