Illinois’ Comptroller says funding for non-profit agencies should remain a priority amid state budget cuts and payment delays. Judy Baar Topinka made her comments at a stop in PARC, the Peoria non-profit organization that helps developmentally-disabled individuals. The state comptroller says she wants non-profits to call her office if their facing dire financial straits: “We’ll start working out where they need the money, how much do they need right away, if we can’t give them the whole amount can we give them part of it and will that hold them over the hurdle to the next move,” Barr Topinka says.
“Also too, we try and out them on a regular payment cycle so at least they have predictability.”
Topinka says her office has also prioritized state payments to PARC and other programs that help disabled people. Even so, PARC officials say the state is $1.2 million behind in payments. They say they’ve stepped-up fundraising efforts and are seeking other sources of revenue as the state continues to lag in its payments.
