The Peoria County Board Executive Committee says Peoria County voters should choose whether to eliminate two constitutional offices. The committee voted five to three to send the question to the full county board. If the Peoria County approves sending the ballot question, voters would decide whether to eliminate the Recorder of Deeds and Auditor's offices, sending the duties to the Peoria County Board. County Board member Andrew Rand says it just makes good sense. “This is about how much taxpayers should be paying for the next 25-years. This isn’t about whether these functions are going to be professionally done or independent of somebody’s authority.” The move has a potential savings of 400-thousand dollars a year, and would eliminate a total of five full-time jobs. County Board member Allen Mayer voted against the referendum. He says it’s important to maintain the independence of the auditors offices. “The Auditor’s function is one where you have to be the watchdog of the taxpayers. Do you really want the politicians and bureaucrats picking who your watchdog is?” The Peoria County Board is to decide whether to place such questions on the November ballot at its August 9th meeting. |
