The Illinois office Of Tourism says new developments on Peoria’s riverfront will help boost tourism in the area.  The Caterpillar Visitors Center and Peoria Riverfront Museum are points of praise from Jan Kostner with the office of Tourism.  She says the new facilities and hotel projects will combine to help the area attract more visitors:

“If there’s multiple things for them to do, they’ll come they’ll stay several days,” Kostner says.
“The other thing that’s real exciting is conventions and trade shows and I know that you host a lot of sports tournaments as well.  It really actually puts Peoria out there in the competitive setting and makes it much more interesting and exciting for those kinds of groups to want to come here because there’s more things to do.”

People spent more nearly $300 million on hotels, shopping and restaurants in Peoria County last year.  That’s a more than 10-percent increase from 2010.  The Caterpillar Visitors Center is about 75-percent complete.  The roughly 50,000 square foot structure is set to officially open with the Riverfront Museum October 20th.
