The Peoria City/County Health Department is working to reduce obesity in the region by five-percent in the next four years. The goal is part of the Department’s recently approved Health Needs Assessment Plan. It’s the result of an Illinois Department of Health survey that found about a third of the population exceeded recommended weight levels in 2008. The local health department is teaming up with a large collaborative that’s been working to decrease obesity. The Central Illinois Wellness Council instituted various health reforms in local schools and is engaging parents in the process. Peoria Public Radio’s Denise Molina reports the organization is expanding its mission to the rest of the community.
