Proctor Hospital breaks ground for healing garden

Proctor Hospital staff and volunteers broke ground Tuesday for a Healing Garden.  The new garden is going to be next to the lobby entrance.  The $150,000 project is part of an effort by Proctor to get designated as a Plane-tree hospital.  Plane-tree is a national non-profit group that aims to provide more holistic care for patients.  David Wentworth is chair of the Proctor Board of Trustees.  He says the Healing Garden will complement the medical care patients receive inside the medical complex:

“This is a very very visible way to inject part of the life back into a healthcare experience,” Wentworth says.

“So you’re not in a room with white walls and the fluorescent lights, you’re outside in a garden with seasonal foliage and a stream running through that’s literally steps away from your loved-one’s hospital room, or you can actually if you’re recovering walk out here and enjoy it yourself.”

The garden is expected to be complete later this fall.  The hospital is also partnering with community groups to offer massage therapy and added volunteer greeters in the emergency room. It’s planning to implement a valet service to help patients into the hospital from the parking lot.
