Riverfront Museum considered for conventions, special events

It’s more than just exhibits that are attracting some residents to the much anticipated Peoria Riverfront Museum. Some are looking to rent out the planetarium, auditorium and lobby space. Nikki Cole is Vice president of development for the Museum. She says people are calling to have weddings and other special events underneath the planetarium dome:

“One really unique call was a family who’s been trying to conceive for a long time and they finally are expecting their first child and they wanted to announce the birth in a unique way,” Cole says.

“So they said can we have the night sky of the due date of the baby and announce to our family that we’re having a child. That’s a really unique experience that we can do...the night sky of the night you were born we can have projected.”

Cole says the fiber-optic planetarium can display any digital image on the dome. She says people are still expressing interest even though the museum hasn’t posted rental rates or promoted the concept. Cole says the new museum is also helping attract conferences to the area. She says the Great Lakes Planetarium Association is holding its conference at the Museum next year. The museum is set to open October 20th along with the Caterpillar Visitors Center.
