Two Peoria residents face federal charges related to what authorities are calling a large-scale heroin operation. Lamar Burton and Shirley Williams are charged with conspiracy to distribute more than 100 grams of heroin over the past year. The arrests come as the Peoria-area has seen a significant boost in heroin use in the last year. US Attorney Jim Lewis says there’s no specific reason why the area is seeing an increase in the drug:
“To a certain degree it may also be a function of that we’ve been able to slow down or stop some fo the alternatives,” Lewis says.
“But I think it’s also a function of supply, demand and price.”
The arrests are the latest in “Operation Blue Horse” that’s targeting area heroin distribution in Peoria. Lewis was joined by Peoria Police Chief Steve Settingsgaard and Peoria State’s Attorney Jerry Brady. Brady says his office sent out letters to county high schools highlighting the dangers of heroin. He says medical and law enforcement officials are also looking to talk to high school students in the classroom about the drug. |
