Children participating in the Peoria Friendship House’s summer camp are learning what it takes to be a successful student athlete. The organization is welcoming athletes from area high schools and Bradley University as part of its so-called “Wacky World of Sports Week”.
The athletes are talking to kindergarten through eighth grade students about the importance of staying in school, getting good grades and staying active. April Troyer is the Director of Education for the Friendship House. She says the goal is to get kids up and moving.
"Research says when children are up and moving that they gain healthy lifestyles. So, we're trying to do a different camp model this summer with integrating different ways to move and get physical," says Troyer.
Troyer says children will be exposed to all kinds of sports this week including basketball, dance, yoga, golf and tennis. About 85 children are participating in the summer camp. |
