Early projections show 2013 deficit for City/County Health department

The Peoria City/County Health Department is projecting a $160,000 budget deficit next year.  That’s compared to a more than $200,000 deficit the agency negotiated for this year.  Health Administrator Greg Chance says the health department is able to maintain the current state funding level for infectious disease, tobacco prevention and HIV programs next year. But the deficit is driven by other growing costs:

“The bad news is, however just like everybody’s household budget, our expenses do increase on an annual basis especially our personnel costs…it is challenging for those grants that stay level or stagnant funding to completely cover the cost of providing service,” Chance says.

Chance says in the last two years the agency has balanced its budget on reserves and will employ the same strategy if need be for next year. The office has also reduced its staff by about a third through attrition.  Chance says the health department has $2.8 million in reserves. He says the Board of Health is planning to send its recommended budget to the County Board by end of summer.
