A new scam has surfaced targeting Ameren Illinois customers. It’s reportedly nearly identical to a scam that happened in May where customers were asked to give their social security numbers. The scam comes through in-person customer visits, posting fliers, using social media and texts. A statement from Ameren says people should never allow anyone in their home for utility checks of any sort unless the customer has scheduled an appointment and the person has proper identification. Every Ameren employee has identification including an official ID number and logo. Customers are also to be suspicious of callers claiming to be Ameren representatives seeking immediate payment. Ameren customers are asked to call the police and Ameren if they suspect they’ve been scammed or immediately after being approached. The Ameren number is 800-755-5000. More tips to avoid being scammed are at Ameren.com. |
