New program helps domestic violence survivors in Peoria

Lieutenant Governor Sheila Simon launched a virtual legal clinic in Peoria for domestic violence survivors.  The new pilot program is housed at the Peoria Center for Prevention and Abuse and connects survivors with free legal experts using webcams over the internet.  Simon says the program helps answer questions that survivors of domestic abuse might have:

“Questions about what legal problems are in my future, are they ones I need a lawyer for, are they ones I can do for myself?”, Simon says.

“If it’s something I can do for myself where do I go, what’s the best library, what’s the best source on the internet?”

The program has helped 12 people using four lawyers from across the state since it began late last year.  The virtual legal clinic is also expanding into the Crisis Center Foundation in Jacksonville this month.
