2012 Prairie Air Show canceled

The Prairie Air show will not be taking place on the Riverfront this year after all. Organizers of the event announced the annual show has been canceled.

The free event was supposed to happen the weekend of June 8th.  But the show was delayed after Peoria and East Peoria city officials requested the air show come up with 42-thousand dollars for public expenses like security and maintenance. Air Show Director Brett Krause says the cost was too much to bear.

"We completely and fully understand the issues that they are faced with. Unfortunately, we just could not take that burden upon ourselves, and we could not garner enough sponsorship support to help offset that," says Krause.

Krause says it’s unlikely air show officials will try to hold an event along the Peoria Riverfront again. He says he’d rather  team up with a central Illinois airport to hold a show in 2013.

The Prairie Air Show used to take place at the Peoria International Airport. But airport officials last year raised concerns about continuing the show at the facility due to ongoing safety issues. The 2012 event would have been the 28th consecutive show produced by Prairie Air Show.
