Stepped up law enforcement at Taft

The Peoria Housing Authority and Peoria Police Department say Taft Homes will not be a free for all zone for mischief this July 4th. People illegally brought commercial grade fireworks to the housing complex during last year’s holiday celebration, and shot them at police and firefighters at the scene. Several first responders were burned in the incident.

PHA officers and Peoria Police this year will increase law enforcement presence beginning this week. They plan to have up to 20 officers on staff the day of the Riverfront fireworks show. Peoria Police Lieutenant Tom Larson is the Safety and Security Administrator for the PHA.  He says the goal is to keep Taft residents safe.

"In prior years, we've had problem. Last year, the problems got out of hand, and the police department and the Peoria Housing Authority are not going to tolerate putting residents of the Taft at risk just so some people from the outside can come in with the intent of breaking the law," says Larson.

Larson says police will also be stationed at Taft’s entry gates making sure those on the trespass list aren’t allowed on the property. Family and guests will be permitted to visit. Police will also have a zero tolerance policy against illegal fireworks, public consumption of alcohol, and other violations.
