Food trucks will not be licensed in the city of Peoria anytime soon. Peoria Public Radio’s Tanya Koonce reports: The Peoria City council voted down ordinance language that set up guidelines for the mobile restaurants. Peoria Mayor Jim Ardis was one of six no votes. He says progressive or not, he has concerns about the functionality of what the city is doing already:
“The system right now I don’t think works very well. We certainly don’t regulate it, and I do think it creates additional inequities between brick and mortar folks that are there paying property taxes and utilities all year round, and people that actually drive to where the business may be (with the) perfect location without doing that,” says Ardis.
The vote was the result of council deferrals, public meetings and uncounted hours of staff time. At large city councilman Ryan Spain says he disappointed they’ve spent time and resources on something that could have voted down two months ago.
The council also received a 2013 budget forecast from the city manager. The city is facing an estimated 750-thousand dollar budget shortfall for next year. The city negotiated a more than 9 1/2 million dollar deficit this year. |
