Twelve central Illinois people face federal charges related to what authorities are calling a large scale methamphetamine operation. Those charged include people from Pekin, Topeka, Peoria and East Peoria. Officials say they conspired to make and distribute more than 500 grams of meth in the last two years. Pekin police Chief Greg Nelson says the indictments came as the result of teamwork: “It’s really a synergy of everything put together,” Nelson says. “It’s the agencies working together, it’s the businesses cooperating, and it’s also the legislation that allows law enforcement to keep an eye on pseudoephedrine, because that’s the primary ingredient in meth.”
The Pekin Police Department, Tazewell County Sheriff’s Office and Illinois State Police formed a task force last year to target the resurgence in meth use. About 40 people have been arrested since the task force was formed. Officials say residents can help law enforcement by reporting suspicious activity or strange odors in their neighborhoods. |
