Peoria Teachers Union gives Lathan low-marks

Peoria District 150 Superintendent Grenita Lathan is receiving failing marks from rank and file teachers. Peoria Federation of Teachers President Bob Darling says the evaluation has the same criteria used to evaluate teachers state-wide.  He says he can’t share specific details of the evaluation.  Darling says the union feels Lathan is not meeting their standards:

“If she was a classroom teacher with this evaluation, she would be on the honorable discharge list,” Darling says.

“If she was a building principal and she received this evaluation she would be demoted back to the classroom on a teacher’s salary.”

Darling says there’s not enough communication between administration and educators.  He says more input from teachers and streamlining school initiatives are needed to help improve the workplace.  To that end, teachers rallied before the School Board’s regular meeting.  He says he hopes the district and union continue discussions over the the summer.  Lathan says she meets regularly with the union and answers questions from teachers.  She also says the district has collaborated with the union on writing grants and developing a teacher evaluation system.
