Area law enforcement are working with the Illinois Department of Transportation to increase patrols over Memorial Day weekend. The national campaign targets those disobeying traffic laws. Peoria Police Lieutenant Steve Roegge says officers will especially watch for anyone not wearing a seatbelt. "Your chances of being pulled over for not wearing seatbelts have increased. A new law that went into effect on January one of this year mandates all occupants secured in a seatbelt no matter where they're sitting in a vehicle," says Roegge. The holiday weekend safety campaign costs Illinois about 1.7 million dollars in federal funding. Roegge says Memorial Day weekend is one of seven heightened safety events throughout the year. |
