The State Board of Education President says proposed cuts to education funding would hurt students. Gery Chico says he supports Governor Quinn’s proposal to keep education funding steady next fiscal year. He says he’s against a House measure that would cut general state aid to schools by about $260 million
“And if we start pulling back now, having less teachers, less hours in the day and less programs, you can see where this is going to lead,” Chico says.
“We’re going to have a very bleak future for our state.” Chico says residents should tell their state representatives to oppose the proposed cuts in the House. Peoria Schools Superintendent Grenita Lathan says the District could lose $900,000 in general state aid if the House measure is passed. She says that’s in addition to the $2.5 million in general state aid that was promised to the district and is NOT being funded. Lathan says the district could look at scaling back extra-curricular activities, social workers and other cuts if the state funding reductions continue. |
