Emergency responders get high-risk training in Peoria

Emergency responders from around the mid-west received hands-on training in Peoria. This is the first regional Tactical Medicine Training program in the area.  Area physician John Wipfler lead the two-day training.  He says the real-world simulations fill a training gap for first responders:

“We found that a lot of paramedics, EMTs and firefighters are relly not trained what to do in a high-risk situation,” Wipfler says.

“In terms of having law enforcement, SWAT teams and potential for a bomb blast and a bad guy shooting guns for the most part.”

The training scenarios were held at Peoria Alternative high school.  The curriculum included evacuating hostages, dealing with armed criminals and acts of terrorism.  The first responders participants receive continuing education credit for the training through Illinois Central College.  Doctor Wipfler says he hopes to hold similar area-training sessions in the future.
