Town hall meeting focusing on concealed carry issue

The President of the Peoria Branch of the NAACP wants more community dialogue on the issue of concealed carry. There are several measures under consideration in the General Assembly that would give residents the right to carry guns in public. Illinois remains the only state without some form of a concealed carry law, and area lawmakers generally support the idea. That includes Democrats Jehan Gordon and Dave Koehler.

The Peoria NAACP invited Otis McDonald to speak about the issue at a town hall meeting. McDonald is the lead plaintiff in the U.S. Supreme Court case that ruled Chicago’s handgun ban unconstitutional and supports concealed carry. Peoria NAACP president Don Jackson says it’s time to talk about the issue locally.

"I think the community's position needs to be known, and nobody's asked us about it," says Jackson.

"God bless her. I love her to death, but Jehan has not asked us what our position is, at least the African American community. Neither has Dave Koehler. They are two representatives of the entire community, and they ought to know how the African American community feels about this."

Jackson says he doesn’t fully support concealed carry but invited McDonald because he wants to hear all arguments on the subject. The town hall meeting is at seven and includes a question and answer session. It’s at the NAACP Peoria Branch on MacArthur Highway.
