Teachers protest Quinn’s proposed pension hike

Some area school teachers are protesting Governor Quinn’s proposed changes to the state pension system.  Teachers gathered outside the offices of Senators Dave Koehler and Darin LaHood to protest the Governor’s proposed three-percent increase in pension contributions.  Toni Strong is a teacher at Peoria Richwoods High School.  She says the it’s unfair to teachers:

“Currently we pay 9.4 percent of our teachers salaries towards our pension” Strong says.

“Three percent more is a drastic increase. We want to make sure the public knows teachers do not receive social security even if they have worked in jobs that would be eligible for that.”

Strong says lawmakers should include teachers in crafting any pension changes. The Governor is also proposing to raise the retirement age from 55 to 67.  Strong says that leaves teachers unsure of how much longer they could have to work before retiring.
