East Peoria's proposed budget for next fiscal year calls for no layoffs or property tax increases. Peoria Public Radio's Alex Rusciano reports the spending plan also has no discretionary spending:
The $48 million budget means no vehicle or equipment purchases. As well, a request by the police chief to add three additional officers next year is not included in the spending plan. Commissioner Gary Densberger says the main reason for the tight budget next year is about a million-dollar increase in employee salary and pension costs: “Those increases are significant, and we need to find a way to manage those so at no point do they consume all of the revenue increases we plan to collect because we need to have police officers, we need to fix more streets we need to do all those things.”
Densberger says the projected budget does include continued funding for the Fondulac, Centennial and Summit drive projects. He says department heads will have to cut items out of their budget if they need to purchase things that aren’t provided for. A public hearing on the budget is set for next Tuesday. The city’s new fiscal year begins May first. |
