Officials with the Mid-West Truckers Association say they are working with Illinois lawmakers to craft hands-free legislation for all drivers. About six-thousand members of the association are in Peoria this weekend for its 50th annual conference. The U.S. Department of Transportation in January implemented a rule that bans commercial drivers from using hand-held cell phones while operating trucks or buses. Don Schaefer is the Executive Vice President of the truckers association. He says the group is working with state lawmakers on legislation banning electronic devices for all drivers. "We want a level playing field. We feel that if it's going to be safe for truckers, it's safe for car drivers. The fact is you're only taking care of half the problem if you're just going to ban the use of hand-held cell phones with commerical vehicle operators," says Schaefer. Schaefer says members of the truckers association will sport “Watch the Road” stickers on their vehicles to send the message that distracted driving is still an issue. The association represents more than three-thousand trucking companies in 14 states. |
