Springdale Cemetery looks to past challenges, new year efforts

Springdale Cemetery came through some challenges in 2012 and is better for it. That’s according to Management Authority Chair Bob Manning. He says the grounds looked nice all year despite an undermanned staff, they found agreement with the Islamic Center for burials, and worked to minimize the cemetery’s deficit. Manning says the deficit challenges will continue into the new year.

“Sales and revenues are always going to be a challenge when you have the national trend of traditional burials declining,” Manning says. “That just means we need to step up in areas such as the green burials, where we can really be unique and there’s only a couple of cemeteries in the state that can do that and we’re one of them. So we need to make some advancements in that area.”
Manning says the authority continues looking for ways to contain costs. He says that effort will likely take the shape of forging new partnerships with community groups.
