Special holiday police patrols underway

State and local police have already started special patrols for the holiday season. Peoria Public Radio’s Tanya Koonce reports:

This year’s campaign is called Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over. Much of the effort was likely overshadowed last week by the blizzard that commanded significant police attention to accidents and weather related incidents. But Illinois State Police District 8 Spokesman Dustin Pierce says they started special enforcements last week and are aiming to reduce the number accidents and deaths:

“We’re going to be doing seatbelt enforcement zones which we’ve already been doing. We’ll also do roadside safety checks and the alcohol counter measure enforcement patrols all geared towards preventing tragedies, trying to keep the people who are impaired off of the roadways,” says Pierce.

Trooper Pierce says traffic fatalities are up statewide. He says 27 people have died in crashes this year in District 8. That includes Peoria, Tazewell, Woodford, Marshall and Stark Counties. The Trooper says impaired driving was a factor in all of the fatalities. A D.U.I. ticket this holiday season is estimated to cost upwards of 20-thousand dollars by the time all resulting factors are handled.
