Quinn calls again for assault weapons ban

Governor Pat Quinn says the time for an assault weapons ban in Illinois is now.

"I think the tragedy that occurred in Colorado, in Oregon and definitely in Connecticut, hopefully is awakened all of us that this is something we cannot delay on.. That we must act."

Quinn says Friday's rampage in Newton, particularly the loss of so many children, should appeal to people's consciences.  A gunman left 20 children and six adults dead at an elementary school.
Quinn said Monday at an unrelated event in Chicago that he has reached out to top lawmakers and sponsors of a proposed assault weapons ban.
The governor says lawmakers should consider the ban when they reconvene for the lame duck session in January.
Quinn pushed for an assault weapons ban after a deadly shooting at a Colorado movie theater this summer.
He used his power of amendatory veto to rewrite a bill to ban assault weapons.  Lawmakers rejected it.
