Peoria's Allen/Alta Road roundabout decision delayed

The Peoria City Council deferred a decision on whether the Allen/Alta road project in North Peoria should have a roundabout.  The Council also delayed a decision on whether the city should take ownership of more than two-miles of Alta Lane and other roads from the state.  The City’s share of the Allen Road project is nearly six-and-a-half million dollars.  City Manager Patrick Urich says the transfers are one way the city could pay for its part of the project:

“So what I-DOT is saying is if you take over those roads, we will in essence give you $6 million of credit towards this project,” Urich says.

“We’re not going to get paid $6 million in cash, I-DOT would just simply make the improvements, pay the $6 million in the construction project, and that would be their obligation.”

But some Councilmembers wanted more information on a state roundabout study and who would control the speed limit on Alta Lane.  The Council will take up the issues again next month.  In other business the Council approved longer weekend closures on Water Street for outdoor entertainment.  The closures will now start at 11 in the morning Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays instead of at 4.  City Manager Patrick Urich says the city likely will not allow any street events when Washington and State Streets are closed in the coming years for roadwork.
