Peoria Public Library officials joined law enforcement and prosecutors to announce the special Peoria Reads ‘Don’t Shoot’ project. Peoria reads features the community ready one book. This time the book is Don’t Shoot, by David Kennedy. It addresses ways law enforcement and the community can reduce violence crime. U.S. Attorney Jim Lewis says even reading highlight chapters from the book can help spark a necessary community dialogue: “And you will learn exactly what that conversation is like,” Lewis says.
“When law enforcement and grandmothers and family and clergy and everybody gets together and has that difficult, courageous, necessary conversation.”
Copies of the book Don’t Shoot are available at Peoria Public Library branches or at Common Place. The Don’t Shoot initiative coincides with the National Night Out Against Crime. Peoria residents, businesses and community groups meet tonight as part of an effort to reduce crime.
WCBU is also hosting a four-part roundtable on the book and community initiative Thursdays at 1:00. The shows re-air Sundays at 3:00. The roundtable series will also be available at wcbufm.org.
