Illinois stands to gain as more companies have the opportunity to do business with South Korea. That’s one of the many messages anticipated to come out of a panel discussion about the country Thursday evening. The so-called “Future of Korea” event features three experts speaking on political, economic and security issues as well as the situation on the Korean peninsula following the death of Kim John Il. Another major topic is South Korea’s trade relationship with Illinois and the U.S. The country remains a leading market for Midwest exports like Caterpillar machinery and agricultural products. Jinwook Kim is the Counselor at the Korean Embassy. He says the country is hoping to see even more diverse products exported from the area now that the U.S-Korea Trade agreement is in place. "There are a lot. I found that car and car parts are a big industry around here and pharmaceuticals, there's a good chance for them to explode and do business with Korea. Generally, the total environment of business will be upgraded through this FTA," says Kim. 18-percent of Illinois’s exports currently go to South Korea. That number is anticipated to grow with the Trade Agreement. The Peoria Area World Affairs Council and Korean Economic Institute are sponsoring the panel discussion at the Ivy Club in Peoria Heights. Those interested in attending the 7 o’clock discussion can purchase tickets at the door for 15-dollars. |
