North Peoria learns about planned road projects

About 175 people turned out at Northwoods Church to talk about the planned road projects for North Peoria. Up to three of the road projects include installing roundabouts in place of intersections. Its a new idea to some and a completely foreign to others.  But roundabouts are used almost exclusively in many European Countries. Jennifer Maier is a North Peoria resident who lived in France for five years. She says the roundabouts are fairly easy to navigate and there are signs at every entrance to the roundabout to tell people which lane to take for exit. Maier says “its very easy and everyone just merges, everyone just does the right thing, and everyone has to slow to go in so it is easier to merge.”
Public works planners have said they will not install a roundabout in areas that do not warrant that method, and the measurements of the planned roundabouts account for buses and truck traffic.  Other questions during the meeting included how the projects will be paid for, how and when sidewalks would be installed and how neighborhood businesses might remain accessible during the road closures for construct.
