The Regional Strategic Policy Steering Committee met for the first time to identify and set its course. The committee is comprised of 30 people from the public and private sector throughout the region who have agreed to help create an asset-based Community Economic Development Plan. Jim Baumgartner is Director of Caterpillar’s Corporate Public Affairs and is chairing the committee. He says the two year process aims to match the thrust of development in the region with the new global economy. “Companies not just Caterpillar, but companies within our region are all directly impacted by the global economy in one form or another and recognizing the economy is more global today requires economic development to be done in a whole different way than it ever was, and this is the start of that,” Baumgartner says.
The regional strategic planning effort includes Peoria, Tazewell, Woodford and Mason Counties. The steering committee meets again in a month. The group is to have the Foundation Milestone set by October. That is one of four major benchmarks in the regional economic development process being led by Maryland based consulting firm Vital Economy.
