Heartland Partnership looks to begin reorganization

The Heartland Partnership is asking government entities to run the government organizations currently under its umbrella.  Peoria Public Radio’s Alex Rusciano reports that’s according to a letter from the Heartland Partnership last week:

The letter is from Heartland Board of Directors Chair Mark Spenny.  It was sent to Larry Whitaker, chair of the Tri County Regional Planning Commission.  The letter says Heartland Partnership wants to transfer control of the Port District and the National Scenic Byway program currently under its roof to other government entities.  Port District Director Steve Jaeger says moving his organization could mean savings:

“There’s a significant overhead expense associated with being at Heartland Partnership,” Jaeger says.
“Part of that is the building they’re in.  It’s a large building, a former restaurant building up on the deck at Riverfront Village.  And Heartland Partnership and its contracts with the member-organizations under its roof basically covers those expenses.  We think we can probably save ourselves a considerable amount of money as we move off into the unknown.”

Jaeger says he hopes the Port Authority has a new home selected in the next month. The move comes as Heartland Partnership is having financial issues and an outside economic consultant has recommended the organization’s restructuring to make it more effective.
