The transformation of Harrison Homes continues with the completion of the third phase of redevelopment. The Peoria Housing Authority is working to build a total of 200 new residences at the site and tear down the remaining barracks-style apartments. More than 40 units were built as part of the first and second phases of the project. PHA officials Wednesday cut the ribbon on another 35 apartments at the site. They are made up of 2 to 5 bedroom homes. Yvonne Long is the PHA’s Director of Modernization and Development. She says many of the features of the third phase are the result of resident input. "Age-appropriate playgrounds and the ability to be able to see them and have their constant contact with their children while they're on the playground. And to be able to have coat closets on the first floor and a storage unit where they can put their lawn mowers or their bikes," says Long. The new homes also include high efficient furnaces and air conditioners, increased day-lighting, and hybrid water heaters. 50-percent of the apartments are filled. Potential residents must be working, going to school or be disabled to qualify for the housing. The Harrison Homes redevelopment is a little more than a third complete.
