East Peoria saw significant business investment and progress on its new downtown this year. Peoria Public Radio’s Alex Rusciano reports: City officials say one of the biggest wins of the year was the opening of CostCo. But the timing of one well-known holiday tradition in East Peoria also started a week earlier for the first time. The Festival of Lights Parade was held a week before Thanksgiving, and the winter wonderland display opened on Thanksgiving Day. City Councilman Tim Jeffers says the change had a positive effect:
“We are having a great average, we are up in attendance by about 25-percent over a year ago, which that extra week gave us that. If the weather stays reasonable we’re going to end up with a record year I believe for Winter Wonderland,” jeffers says.
Jeffers says Target and multiple other retailers are set to join CostCo in the new downtown in the New Year. He says that will mean millions of dollars in additional sales tax revenue. |
