Changes for the Peoria Geographic Information System

Peoria County is set to take over coordinating the area’s Geographic Information System that provides digital mapping data. Peoria Public Radio’s Alex Rusciano reports the change will likely happen in January:

Peoria GIS was formed through an agreement in 1997 between the City, County and Greater Sanitary District. All three groups worked to collectively map out property lines, roads and geographic contours. Officials now say the geographic information has reached a point of mostly maintenance. Scott Sorrel is Assistant Peoria County Administrator. He says the County will take a central role in GIS:

“The three governmental entities are going to maintain the data layers that are their responsibility and then they’re going to transmit that to the County so that we’re kind of the clearing house or the library of the data,” Sorrel says.

“What we will do is keep that data and make sure it gets out on our GIS website.”

The trio of governments are expecting to save money with the move. Sorrel says the County may need to hire an additional employee to cover the workload. He says users of the system will not notice a difference after the change. All three government entities still need to sign-off on dissolving the agreement.
